New 2007 North American International Auto Show

It's hard to explain the sheer crush of humanity that courses through the Cobo Center in Downtown Detroit on the opening press days of the North American International Auto Show, now in its 100th year. To put it frankly, it looks like the starting gate of the Kentucky Derby, without the ringing bell and the shouting of "...and they're off". The call of free food, some really cool swag and hot cars turns the average automotive journalist into a seething mass of positive emotion. To say I am immune to this golden trio of autophilia would be a lie.

Auto shows aren't usually the kinds of events that send people into Proustian reverie. That said, when making the rounds and walking the floor these past few days, I was constantly reminded about why I got into this business of cars, as opposed to going to law school - sorry, mom. Cars, to put it in blunt academic terms, are pretty freaking cool. Take a look at the Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept, which may or may not be the new NSX, and tell me that it's not one of the coolest-looking things you have ever seen. With its outré lines, flashy styling, long hood and bulbous rear haunches, the Acura is a piece of mobile modern art, on par with anything at MOMA in New York City. Well, maybe not as cool as Jackson Pollock's Shimmering Substance but you catch my drift.
